Shepard's Dial Timepiece

Based on a reliquary chain from Gåtebo Sweden, the reliquary here having been replaced with a Medieval sundial, this timepiece uses the Sun's height to determine the time. Two different gnomen, seen suspended from small chains at upper left of cylinder, allow this dial to be used at two different latitudes. The gnomen are placed in a socket and cast a shadow down upon the grid below. When the cylinder is rotated to the proper time of the year the length of the shadow will indicate the time of day.

Wire for the chain and filigree is hand-drawn silver. Star sapphires adorn the end caps. The space between the time grids is filled with an interlaced animal, while the months are indicated around the cylinder's bottom by a row of runes.
